Kuo starts in place of Billingsley due to threat of rain
LOS ANGELES -- In an unusual move, the Dodgers announced 17 minutes before Wednesday night's game against San Francisco that Hong-Chih Kuo would be the starting pitcher instead of Chad Billingsley "because of pending inclement weather."
The National Weather Service listed the chance of rain Wednesday night at 60 percent.
Kuo, making his first regular-season appearance since undergoing a fourth elbow operation last summer, was warmed up and ready to pitch the 10th inning if Tuesday night's 3-2 victory over the Giants had gone extra innings.
He took the bullpen mound for pregame warmups only 15 minutes before the scheduled first pitch and warmed up for seven minutes. After the Dodgers announcement, the Giants copied the idea and replaced scheduled starter Tim Lincecum with Merkin Valdez.
Dodgers vice president Josh Rawitch relayed word from manager Joe Torre that Billingsley might follow Kuo in the game, or be held back to pitch in a Thursday makeup game if there was a rainout.
Torre said the starter for Friday's game in San Diego, originally expected to be Hiroki Kuroda, would be determined after he sees whether Billingsley is used.
