Hoping to maintain status Kuo BY BOB HERZOG Newsday Staff Writer October 5, 2006 His first major-league start was against the Mets and it was so magical that for his next trick, Hong-Chih Kuo will make his first postseason start on the same mound tonight. "I think he showed us the same thing he showed the whole world - he's not scared of anyone," Dodgers manager Grady Little said of his Game 2 starter. "He's got good stuff. He challenged the hitters. He works fast. That's all we're looking for right here." Kuo blanked the Mets for six innings on Sept. 8 and earned his only big-league victory. The stakes are a lot higher tonight for the Taiwanese lefthander, but like his former high school teammate, Chien-Ming Wang of the Yankees, Kuo seemed unfazed by his circumstances. Asked before yesterday's series opener what was the biggest game he ever pitched, Kuo calmly smiled and said, "Probably tomorrow." Two years after graduating high school, Kuo came to America, as did Wang, and they stayed in touch. Both have experienced arm trouble - Kuo twice underwent Tommy John surgery - and they talked about rehab as well as their pitching repertoires. Kuo is more of a fastball-slider pitcher; Wang's specialty is a heavy sinker. The two spoke a few days ago. "I told him good luck and he told me the same thing," Kuo said of Wang. Kuo might need it, considering that his opponent, Tom Glavine, has 289 more career victories. "It would be nerve-wracking to say the least," Glavine said. "I don't know his personality, but looking back at my career, at that point I would have been nervous."
