A case of poor timing Hawks free agent unlikely to sign with Griz By Ronald Tillery [email protected] July 19, 2003 Another name has surfaced in the Grizzlies' search for a swingman, but bad timing may foil the deal. Steve Kauffman, a Los Angeles-based agent for Atlanta Hawks' free-agent forward Ira Newble, said Friday that the Grizzlies had offered Newble a deal. But because the team was seeking an immediate answer, Newble was inclined to pass on a package that would have been for a "portion" of the $4.9 million mid-level exception. "They want an answer and Ira wants more time," Kauffman said. "We may not be able to do anything with (the Grizzlies). At the moment it doesn't look like it'll get done." Newble, 28, played the past two seasons with the Atlanta Hawks. The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported that Newble could sign a contract with the Griz or Cleveland as soon as Friday after breaking off talks with the Chicago Bulls. The Bulls and Grizzlies, meanwhile, are awaiting word from veteran forward Scottie Pippen. The 37-year-old future Hall-of-Famer is expected to inform Chicago of his intentions early next week. The Grizzlies have not given Pippen a deadline. The Grizzlies' interest in Newble raises questions about their courtship of Pippen. Newble is a defensive-minded player who often guarded the opponent's best offensive player. However, the Grizzlies seemed more involved with Pippen, who met with majority owner Michael Heisley Wednesday at a Chicago restaurant. The Griz are tempted by Pippen's defensive and leadership abilities. It is believed that he will choose between the Griz and Chicago even though Dallas and San Antonio reportedly are options for Pippen. "Scottie has some options that he wants to think about this weekend," Bulls general manager John Paxson told the Chicago Sun Times. "We've invested our time and energy in Scottie to the point where I want him to feel comfortable. I don't want to put any pressure on him. "So we're going to give him the weekend to think it through, and he promised me that at the end of the weekend or early next week, he will tell us one way or another." Attempts to lure Pippen and Newble coincide with the Grizzlies' recent signing of summer league participant Theron Smith to a two-year contract.
