Global Broadcast for GROE Environment Challenge results Today marks the end of the Greatest Race on Earth 2007/08 Environment Challenge , our unique initiative designed to encourage individuals to pledge to make small changes in their lives that will help make a difference to the future of this planet. It is only 5 weeks ago that we were celebrating hitting 1 million pledges. The Environment Challenge closed on Monday 17th March, with the online total standing at just over 2.2 million. However, once all the paper pledges were added to the online total, our final total of pledges was a fantastic 3.4 million. Thank you to everyone who made a pledge or spoke to families and friends about making a pledge. This number of pledges equates to the following potential savings: 7,973,381,200 litres of water - that's the same as 3189 Olympic swimming pools 119,514 tonnes of CO2, which equates to filling Sydney Opera House 2517 times 69,767,568 plastic bags saved from being sent to landfill 378,311 trees saved from being cut down Winning countries The three nations that generated the most environmental pledges per capita, and will consequently share the USD 1 million donation to WWF are: First place (USD 500,000) - Brunei Second Place (USD 350,000) - Taiwan Third Place (USD 150,000) - Hong Kong Projects such as the iconic Heart of Borneo - projects that will make a real difference to the environment, and to the lives of the people who depend on it - will benefit from the donation.
