Gerardus Mercator was a cartographer. In 1542, he opened a cartographic workshop. He took the word "atlas" to describe a collection of maps, and produced the first modern world atlas in 1570. Mercator is remembered for the Mercator projection world map, which is named after him. This proved very useful to many later navigators who could sail across the entire ocean on approximately straight paths.
