标题[SC. ] OG2016-SC137 解析：「过去完成式」

目前手上已取得台湾第一本合法PDF电子档 OG2016。
在研究过着作权法後，决定将本次新增的新题陆续来做解析。
首先秉持着不藏私的精神，与众人协力一同分享，
在此发出台湾首个OG 2016 单题解析。
137. By 1999, astronomers had discovered 17 nearby stars that are
orbited by planets about the size of Jupiter.
(A) had discovered 17 nearby stars that are orbited by planets
(B) had discovered 17 nearby stars with planets orbiting them that were
(C) had discovered that there were 17 nearby stars that were orbited by
planets
(D) have discovered 17 nearby stars with planets orbiting them that are
(E) have discovered that 17 nearby stars are orbited by planets
本题的3-2 split为had/have
相信许多人看到had的时候一定是往句子里找有没有其他的过去式动作吧？
然後看到剩下的另一个动作是are orbited就觉得没有，把had删掉。
可是，请记住，过去完成式在句意上的意义除了「过去的过去」之外，
还可以当做「从过去某时间点，持续到过去另一时间点」的时态。
因为「完成式」本身即有表达持续性的功能，
所以「过去完成式」可以表达「过去一段时间（但并未持续到现在）」的时态。
所以这时候，句首的by 1999（直到1999年之前）就是句意关键了。
「直到1999年以前」代表过去持续到过去的句意。
所以我们必须使用过去完成式had，而非持续到现在的现在完成式have。
接下来，B选项跟C选项分别考到prep+N+Ving跟there be的用法。
提示：
若是要用prep+N+Ving介系词後面的N必须要是修饰语内容的核心成分，
不然会造成句意断裂（介系词片语只接得到N本身，接不到後面的Ving）
there be N 提示：
若N有发出的动作－－there be N Ving.. 或 there be N who/which/that V...
则都算是冗长，因为可以直接改写成 N(S) + V的形式。
比如C选项的
there were 17 nearby stars that were orbited by planets
就可以被改写成17 nearby stars were orbited by planets （S+V）
因此答案选A。
