Murray beat the ninth seed 6-2 0-6 6-4, despite losing seven straight games. Djokovic had earlier beaten Robin Soderling 6-4 6-4, and Rafael Nadal also won, but former champion Andy Roddick lost to Croatian Marin Cilic. And Gilles Simon, who caused a major shock when he put out Roger Federer on Wednesday, beat Jose Acasuso 6-3 6-4. Murray, seeded eighth in Canada, began and ended his match in style but suffered an alarming mid-match slump that saw him drop the second set to love. The 21-year-old broke twice in succession at the start of the match, with his forehand particularly impressive, and when Wawrinka, 23, called for the trainer at 4-0 down an injury-enforced retirement looked on the cards. But the Swiss carried on and, after saving two break points at the start of the second set, he began to find some form.
