By John Nakhla for HOOPSWORLD.com With the trade deadline behind us, the apparent decision to do nothing by the Warriors and their dynamic trio in the front office (GM Garry St. Jean, President of Basketball Operations Robert Rowell, and Special Assistant Chris Mullin) has left Warriors fans with more questions than before. Can the Warriors (or as I like to call them, the Dubs) make the playoffs? Is center Erick Dampier opting out of his contract at season's end? Is there any chance Nick Van Exel opts of his? Is Saint's (Garry St. Jean) job in jeopardy? With all this uncertainty, what's the worst that can happen? Another 3 years of futility, probably. If Dampier opts out to sign elsewhere, the Warriors, in essence lose him for nothing after having a career season. With Damp out of the question, the Dubs would be unable to go after any big name free agent, with Van Exel's contract still on the books for another season. To top it all off, Saint, a friend of team owner Chris Cohan, would be offered a contract extension as GM to continue his streak of anything but excellence. As terrible as that scenario might sound to many fans, it, now, seems more probable than ever. With the Hawks and Suns, among other teams, having enough room under the salary cap to offer Dampier a large contract, the possibility that the Warriors do not bring back Dampier is becoming more of an inevitability. What, though, are the chances that this mess can be somehow salvaged and a competitive team is built by the beginning of the 2004-05 season? A sign-and-trade with Erick Dampier in the offseason? A Nick Van Exel trade early next season? (his contract will be in it's last year and would provide big cap relief) Saint is fired, or moved to another position in the organization, and Mully (Chris Mullin) takes over as General Manager? You never know... the Warriors could start going in the right direction. After all, stranger things have happened. Tracy McGrady and bench warmers for the Warriors starting lineup? Improbable, but not impossible. The fate of the team sits in the lap of one man, Chris Cohan. If Saint Jean is replaced by Mullin as General Manager, fresh blood and a new perspective could be all this team needs to get the ball rolling and bring in the big name that has been missing since the departure of Latrell Sprewell seven years ago, the last All-Star in a Warriors jersey. Since then we have watched the Saint's fleecing at the hands of the other 28, soon-to-be 29, NBA franchises. From the Carter/Jamison trade to the acquisitions of Mookie Blaylock and Danny Fortson, he has taken the Warriors fans along for the ride on the roller coaster of mediocrity, one that all have grown tired and frustrated with. The hope and faith has dwindled with each losing season with the realization that the rebuilding process does not take 10 years of pain and agony. Over these past 10 years, the NBA has had teams fall apart and rebuild, from the playoffs to the lottery back to the playoffs. In that span, the Warriors have made no such progress. Will the streak ever end? Will be a Warriors fan stop being so painful? One can only hope, but before anything does get better, changes must take place. Nick scored nine points in the final period, including consecutives buckets in the final 1:48, both bringing Golden State within one. Nick finished the game with 13 points and 4 assists. "Nick took the game over," said Richardson. "It was good to see him be the old Nick." A slam dunk? Was that mockery to aerial art really the NBA Slam Dunk Contest? It couldn't have been, after all the great competitions throughout past years. After droppin' a dunk that probably ranks top 3 all-time, Jason Richardson was robbed of his three-peat as dunk champion by Fred Jones. Fred Jones... who's that? The worst part of it all, he basically did the same dunk twice... and received a perfect score of 50 both times! Cliffy's streak in danger? Warriors forward/center, Clifford Robinson, has made the playoffs every season of his nearly 17 year career, reaching the post- season in 16 straight seasons. Will the streak end at 16 or can the Dubs pull off a miracle and pull back into the eighth spot in the strong Western Conference? "I thought we'd be in a better position that we are right now," said Clifford Robinson in regards to the teams 7.5-game deficit in the playoff hunt. "Things haven't panned out like I expected them to. But because they haven't doesn't mean I'm not optimistic we can't still make a run at the eighth playoff spot... We have a great group of guys here that are capable of winning ballgames." --
