The Kings of Funk compiled by RZA and Keb Darge

This time my compatriot is that nice man RZA, and if you are unware of
him - whata planet have you been on? We not only share a love of
good music but more importantly, a love of people kicking the shit
out of each other in martial arts movies. However here is not the place
to tell the unlimited how wonderful Mifune is.
In the UK at least, old Funk and Soul seems to be everywhere except the
record shops and radio shows. You can hear it constantly on the TV,
accompanying all kinds of programmes and commericals. Nowadays it
has become the chosen background music for hundreds of trendy bars.
They prefer to spend their time and attention on totally talentless
twats, turning them into characterless, talentless twats to then
spend mountains of money marketung the crap they have produced.
Then we have the brigade that insist music must push boundaries and
forge new styles. Shite! Music should be good and be able to satisfy
and enrich the human spirit. Enough good music had already been made
to last anyone born tomorrow until their grave without boredom
setting in. I am all for people inventing new music forms, but if
it is not as good as what has gone before, why accept a lower
standard of pleasure or, as in some cases, pure irritation, for the
sake of originality?
CD1 RZA
1. Hank Ballard – From the Love Side
James Brown
2. Ken Boothe – It’s Because I’m Black
3. Sly & The Family Stone – Small Talk
Sylvester Stewarts Rock tinged Funk and Soul productions have had an
effect on countless musicians since "everyday people", "Dance to the
music", "sing a simple song", "family affair"and manu more. They will
still be listened to 100 years from now when most of today's muck has
disappointed. Here We have one of his lesser known, yet nonetheless
important recordings.
4. Bobby Humphries - Jasper Country Man
lady with big hair and a big flute....
5. Harlem Underground Band feat. Willis Jackson - Ain急 No Sunshine
6. Booker T & The MG's - Melting Pot
7. Lyn Collins - Do Your Thing
8. Honey Cone - If I Can't Fly
Supreme
9. Ohio Players - Climax
The Ohio Players were a household name when i was a teenager. Which was
handy because it meant i could self pleaseure myself with the aid of their
album covers. If you don't know thier sound "Pack it Up" is a great
introductions; the trademark horns and drums are all in there.
10. Anne Peebles - You've Got The Papers (I've Got the man)
Anne Peebles, best remembered for "Can't stand the rain", is one of the
greatest southern soulstress known to those who know. If you want to
know what a soulful voice is, forget your Beyonce and listen to this.
CD2 Keb Darge
1. Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings - Genuine
Sharon Jones. Ahhhhh! Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Jones
for giving the world your daughter. And thank you Mr. Mrs. Roth
for giving us your boy Gabe to help produce Sharon Jones.
Jennifer Lopez "Get Right"
2. Quantic featuring Spanky Wilson - Don't Joke With A Hungry Man
Quantic, he hails from Brighton on the english south coast, and though
I don't like everything he does, it is all good and touched with genius.
My current playlist features four of his tunes. Spanky Wilson is best know
for her early 70's outing "You" on Mothers Records.
3. MFSB - Family Affair
4. Brand New - Party Time
Brand New recorded "Party time" in Florida in 1976. As you will hear,
they were obviously influenced by the likes of the Blackbyrds.
5. Mighty Generation - The MG Beat
6. Zebra - Simple Song
I 1st heard DJBuddy lan Wright play this down at Madame Jo Jos and
wet my pants.
7. Madcliff - You Can Make The Change
You Can Make The Change is from Madcliff's 1977 Guinness album.
Produced by Chris Hills, who si better known as the leader of the
Players Association and producer of a number of Jazz Funk classics.
I know nothing more about the group and the album itself is not that well
known either by LP collectors so it must be pretty rare.
8. Skying High - Getting Off On Your Loving
I bought the Skying High 45 off Mark "Butch" Dobson, the worlds leading
authority on rare Soul and my favorite DJ.
9. Anna Raye - Will You Love My Child
I'm lucky ain't I ? UK record dealer John Manship phoned me last year with
the opening words. "Oooooooooh Fuckin' hell Keb, I think i have a tune for
you!" He then put the needle down on this little darling. I had seen her
name before on a few semi decent northern records and "Annds Thing " on
Lock Records, which is a pretty good Funk Instrumental from Chicago.
"Will You Love My Child" however, is the kind of tune that does it for me now.
Is this cause I'm older and mellower?
10. Dee Edwards - (I Can) Deal With That
Detroit's De-To label / D-town recordings
