该 port 需要 OpenSSL library ─ 而这东西属於 FreeBSD crypto distribution。
但你机器上当初安装时没装，所以装一下就可以了。
另外我猜你的应该是 FreeBSD 4.X，
打 /stand/sysinstall 然後 Configure -> Distributions 然後把
[ ] crypto Basic encryption services 打勾安装应该就可以了
目前的 Handbook 涵盖范围主要以 6.3-RELEASE 以及 7.0-RELEASE 为主。
在
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/ 首页前几句就有写
"
This handbook covers the installation and day to day use of FreeBSD
6.3-RELEASE and FreeBSD 7.0-RELEASE. ... (previous versions of this handbook
can be obtained from

所以旧的内容请到
http://docs.freebsd.org/doc/ 去翻，
Handbook 向来内容都主要是以当时 -STABLE branch 为主。
