Critical reflections on the nature of art and how we interpret it.
Content:
This series of seminars will reflect on the question of the interpretation of
art. Examples will be chosen from visual, musical, or textual forms of art
practices. ‘Interpretation’ in art is the field of investigation of a branch
of philosophy that is called ‘hermeneutics’. We could say that the artwork
is the bearer of a message in which we see a particular meaning, and the task
of hermeneutics is to understand what is happening when one perceives such a
meaning in the artwork. Therefore, the questions that we will strive to answer
are: What is the nature of the message that the artwork is sending to us, and
how do we grasp it? What kind of meaning are we to find in, or discover from,
the artwork, and correspondingly, what kind of interpretative method are we to
use? The audience will therefore be introduced to the philosophical hermeneutics
of Hans-Georg Gadamer (1900-2002).
There are however many ways to interpret an artwork. Martin Heidegger (1889-
1976), for example, thought that art had the ability to reveal a particular
form of truth, when Maurice Merleau-Ponty (1907-1961) saw artistic experience
as pre-objective and above all embodied in the world. Other interpretative
perspectives will include art as a language to be analysed(Ludwig Wittgenstein,
1889-1951); the imaginative value of art (Jean-Paul Sartre 1905-1980);
deconstruction (Jacques Derrida, 1930-2004); the sublime dimension of art
(Jean-Francois Lyotard, 1928-1998); and the representational nature of art
(Gerald Cipriani 1963- ). The lectures will also address the issue of taste
and value judgement. Should such a judgement be seen as completely subjective
or universal? Should there be a standard of taste? The audience will therefore
be introduced to the aesthetics of David Hume (1711-1776) and Immanuel Kant
(1724-1804).
