标题[问题] 使女的故事一句感到突兀的话

因为很喜欢使女，所以最近又买了原文来读。
第三章有句对白让人觉得很突兀。
I looked at the cigarette with longing.
For me, like liquor and coffee, they are forbidden.
So old what's-his-face didn't work out, she said.
No ma'am, I said.
我的问题是So old what's-his-face didn't work out.这句
特别再翻了中文版，在第30页。
『那麽老，连他的脸长怎麽样的看不出来了，夫人说』
夫人突然冒出这句有点没头没脑，指的是谁？她丈夫吗？
不知道大家对这一小段有什麽看法？
