一个最简单的读法.
The Heart of Darkness at the superficial level 指的当然是
非洲大陆的中心: 非洲大陆在当时仍被认知为the dark continent,
所以Marlow探索的过程,某种程度呼应着the Eurocentric, imperialist,
colonialist, and tourist gaze.
然而这个搜索的过程,却将这个白人帝国殖民文化的丑陋面表露无疑,
in the heart of the dark continent sees the heart of darkness
of the white imperialism and colonialism. And that's where the
horror comes to be born.
换句话说, Kurts的萎靡, 是不是一方面在指涉着帝国文化在剥削
殖民地的过程中,心灵上却是乾枯的?
(别忘了Conrad是现代主义小说家; Cf. T. S. Eliot, "The Wasteland"),
而因之,Kurts是Marlow的镜像,当然这里看到的不是Lacan镜像里面
那个完美的自我(the ideal ego, imago, and the Gestalt),
而是最原始黑暗丑陋的一面;
或许主角叫做Marlow绝非意外, just remember the author of
_Doctor Faustus_, a play in which stages the conflict between
the angel and the devil. The angel and the devil is not
a racial issue here but an ethical one: the very horror comes
from the reversal of the value of good and evil--we think we
are good, in fact we are the heart (center) of darkness (imperialism).
