Federer struggled in the opening set against the Spanish left-hander. He seemed out of sorts as Lopez took him to a tiebreak. There have been question marks over the temperament of the Swiss player, who has been tipped by many, including three- times champion John McEnroe, as a potential Wimbledon winner. Federer 's record at The Championships has been erratic. He has been knocked out in the first round three times, including last year. Yet he defeated seven-times champion Pete Sampras on the way to the last eight two years ago. The fourth seed, though, found his resolve today to win the tiebreak 7-5. Even so, Federer's game remained inconsistent at the start of the second set when he threw away an early break. But his greater big match experience told as he took a two sets to nil advantage. Lopez came into the match with 50 aces, the second highest count at this year's tournament. He was also attempting to become the first player from his country to reach the last eight in 31 years. A repeat of last year's debut run to the last 16 gave him heart. But Federer kept his nose in front to finish off the job in two hours and six minutes. Written by Mike Donovan --
