以我读中文书的习惯，我其实不会觉得前後两个例句不顺说。
英文翻中文不是非把倒装弄回来
ex:
我很有钱, 虽然我很丑
虽然我很丑, 我很有钱
这两句因为强调点不一样，用意也会不一样
语句放前放後是有关系的，否则原作者一开始就直述就好。
不过如果是这句，我比较会觉得问题在於意思不到位
接前後文可以看出作者要表达这城市的古老造成的矛盾
"既宗教又反宗教"
但中文里这意思淡了不少

: 「虽然最後的议员已死去几百年，古老的城门依然静椅，保护议会的厅堂，而身披法袍

原文
Here, ancient gates still hung at rest,
prepared to protect the halls of the Common Council
though the last councilmen were all generations dead.
