Thursday 9th September In an emotional end to a week filled with hype and expectation, Gael Monfils (1 ) of France lost his bid to be the first grand slam winner, since Stefan Edberg , when he bowed to Viktor Troicki, 6-4; 6-2. The Serbia & Montenegro native awoke this morning feeling he could win, despite his two previous losses to the number one player in the world. "I was looking forward to the match," said Viktor. "I enjoyed the play and in the end I made i t, so I am very happy right now. In those two matches I was rushing, making mis takes and he was making the points. Now I tried to be a bit calmer and put more balls in the court. It proved that I did well and that's the reason I won." Leading 4-1 in the first set, the number one player in the world appeared to be doing everything right and enjoying the match. He smiled as he threw himself f rom corner to corner, sliding into the splits as he lunged for balls spinning o ut wide off the court. His enjoyment soon turned to pain, as Viktor started to punish the ground strokes with power and control, blowing the number one seed l iterally off the court. Gael did not win another game in the set, as Viktor rac ked up two breaks and held again. The volatile Frenchman smashed his racquet to the ground in frustration. "I knew he had a good passing shot so I wasn't rushing to the net," said Viktor , preferring to execute his shots from the baseline. "I played him from the bac k and I try to make him play." Gael held to start off the second set, but you could see the enormous physical strain as he continually rubbed his left knee after stretching out wide. The in jury, plus too little match practice, took it's toll on his tall lean frame. "I don't feel so good my game," said Gael, when he was broken for the second time at 4-1. The wind seemed to go out of his sails. "I was injured so I play only one week before, so it's not a lot of time to prepare for this tournament." At 5-2 Viktor served his way to a 40-0 lead and three match points. He fearless ly produced a big serve that Gael dumped into the bottom of the net, for the ma tch. "I feel pretty bad about the grand slam and I feel bad it was me to beat h im, but still I won and I am pretty glad about that," smiled Viktor. "Maybe in the pros he makes it and wins the grand slam. It was a huge moment of frustration for the number one seed, who smashed his ra cquet to the ground once again. "In the moment I was a little bit nervous, but I think afterwards I lost only one tennis match," he said. "I play tennis becau se it's fun. I do my best on the court and I lost. In life people have problems and for me, I can play tennis, so I am lucky." --
