Now though, the 26-year-old from Metz, in the east of France, has the perfect opportunity to make a real name for himself against Andy Roddick. The second seed looks an overwhelming favorite on paper of course, but would do well to bring his A-Rod A-game against a player so naturally gifted – and with nothing to lose. RODDICK - MUTIS LIVE ON RADIO ROLAND GARROS WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON THE STAGE> Andy Roddick reached the third round at Roland Garros back in 2001 in a match that endeared him to the French fans. Despite being severely hampered by cramp, Roddick overcame compatriot Michael Chang in five sets that day. Capable of showing such courage in the face of adversity, ‘A-Rod’ was tipped to prosper at Roland Garros in the coming years. Yet despite rising to world number one in the intervening period, Roddick has failed to impress in Paris. First round defeats in 2002 and 2003 have left him out of love with the ‘terre battue’. This year, in consultation with coach Brad Gilbert (who never enjoyed playing on clay either) he decided to curtail his French Open preparations to one appearance in Rome. He arrived in Paris lacking practice on clay, and only went some of theway to reassuring his fans in his three set victory over Todd Martin in the first round. Olivier Mutis stands at a crossroads. The French tennis establishment has long been well aware of his outstanding potential. A brilliant junior champion, he was tipped for great things, but a lack of ambition and dedication has meant that he has never fulfilled that early promise. His phobia of flying has not helped either, but last season he finally began showing the hunger every top player needs to succeed. Drawing inspiration from his great buddy Sebastien Grosjean, he picked up a number of victories in Challenger tournaments and has continued in the same vein this season. His first round demolition of American Robby Ginepri (6-4 6-4 6-0) is considerable cause for optimism. THE KEYS TO THE MATCH> Roddick’s serve, or more precisely Mutis’s ability to return that serve, will no doubt be central to the outcome. The French outsider has a great eye and an exceptional range of shots at his disposal, but lacks experience of returning Roddick’s calibre of serve. A slow court would suit Olivier but the sun has got his hat on in Paris this week, so he will need to scramble to get back Roddick’s booming groundshots. He will need to be patient, defend, and run, run, run. Variety will be essential if he is to destabilise Roddick, and he must avoid falling into his old habit of switching off at crucial times. But with a passionate crowd right behind him, he can pull this off. HEAD TO HEAD: 1-0 RODDICK> The two have only met once, on clay, in the semi final at Houston. That was Mutis’only appearance in the final four of a major tournament. Exhausted, he went down 4-6 6-1 6-2 to the local hero.
