Fernando Santos left Paulo out, able to field the Katsouranis-Petit axis in midfield after the latter had served out his suspension and Nuno Gomes-Miccoli up front as the Italian had overcome various nagging injuries. Benfica were foiled at first by Fernando for half an hour until Katsouranis threaded a ball through to Miccoli (30 min) who lobbed the keeper with aplomb. The home team appeared curiously timid, only having Sougou out in front and too nervous to really push any of their fledgling counter-attacks to Quim's sticks. Leo built up a flanking attack before ceding to Nuno Gomes, the number 21 tapping back for Miccoli (43 min) to blast the ball past Fernando and nail an early brace. Miccoli almost got his hat-trick in the 51st min, but Fernando defused the danger – for at least another 10 minutes. Nelson aped Leo on the right-hand side, slapping a cross in for Nuno Gomes (61 min) to swivel round and make it 3-0. Simao (66 min) finished the scoring off with a well-taken penalty after Tixier handled a Miccoli shot.
