Katsouranis (23 min) headed in a Paulo Jorge assist to put the visitors ahead. Almost immediately afterwards things started going awry as Nuno Assis had to go off injured and Fernando Santos was forced to make an early change. Pacos tried to minimise the damage after the goal, pulling back to a virtual 6-3-1 formation and only Elias was capable of putting Quim under pressure just before Katsouranis struck. This rocky defensive strategy ended up paying off after a stormy second half. Benfica pushed forward and earned three corners in quick succession, Miccoli sending a shot just wide of Pecanha. Unfortunately things started to look bleak after Leo saw read only ten minutes into renewed play. The wing-back childishly applauded ref Baptista and was sent off. The Pacenses responded with an extra striker – Renato Queiros – as they smelled blood as the Lisbon team began to suffer from nerves. Pacos almost went ahead through Ronny but Quim saved the day. Luiz Carlos went off for an early bath leaving both sides with ten men. Benfica almost scored with ten minutes to go, Luisao leaving the post trembling after a precise Simao free kick found the big man. Five minutes from time Katsouranis also hit Pecanha's post, but just when it seemed that Benfica would scrape their first away win, Joao Paulo (90 min - on for Didi just 8 mins before), beat Anderson and Quim to scrape a last-gasp equaliser.
