Simao got the first good shot on target almost 20 minutes into the match, and Alonso replied with a stinging shot that brought the best out of alert Quim. Just as the visitors seemed to be settling into Da Luz, Luisao (29 min) pounced on a Diego Benaglio error and scored. Nacional didn't just roll over and die; Alonso causing the stands minor heart flutters with an effort that skidded off a beaten Quim's woodwork but didn't go in. The second half was marked by the sending off of Madeira midfielder Cleber, hamstringing any attempts at a comeback. Benfica really should have killed the game off quickly, but their marksmanship is atrocious and Nacional almost managed to come back from dead-ball situations.
