However, two minutes later Portugal's Ricardo Carvalho equalised when he thrust the ball into the roof of the net. Thomas Kahlenberg restored Denmark's lead after 21 minutes by firing under goalkeeper Ricardo Pereira after Jorgensen had again shown his magic by conjuring up a precise cross. With Barcelona midfielder Deco rested and stalwarts Luis Figo and Pauleta having retired from international football, Portugal had to rely on youngsters such as debutant Luis Nani of Sporting and Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo wasted a glorious opportunity to bring Portugal level again when his penalty was saved by Thomas Sorensen just before the hour mark and the vistors had to wait until defender Carvalho popped up to score his second in the 65th.
