Despite regaining the title in 2003/04, Ajax had fallen behind rivals PSV Eindhoven as the Netherlands' top team, and Koeman resigned after the Amsterdam side were knocked out of the UEFA Cup by AJ Auxerre. Koeman and brother Erwin started out at their father's old club, FC Groningen, and were later members of the Netherlands side which won the 1988 UEFA European Championship - the country's first and only major international honour. That triumph capped a momentous year, Koeman also winning the European Cup and Dutch double, and paved the way for a move to Barca in 1989 where he would win another four Spanish titles.
