The experienced defender is looking for a new club after leaving Italian giants Roma at the end of last season. Xavier only linked up with Roma in February but was not kept on at Stadio Olimpico for the forthcoming campaign. The former Liverpool and Everton stopper has now returned to England in the hope of resurrecting his career at The Riverside Stadium. Boro boss Steve McClaren is anxious to strengthen his squad and will give Xavier the chance to prove he is worthy of a contract. Xavier was close to a return to The Premiership last season when he trained with Bolton Wanderers.
