He became proficient enough up front to become the subject of a fierce bidding war between Lisbon's big two clubs, Sporting Lisbon and Benfica. Such was the acrimonious nature of the tug of war that he was even forced to flee Lisbon during negotiations for a tiny Algarve village while the coaches from the two clubs wrangled fiercely over his future.
