Fisichella warns Romans off street races Last Saturday a tragedy occurred in the Italian capital Rome. Three young men crashed during an illegal street race, killing one of them. The other two victims were badly injured. Renault driver, and born Roman, Giancarlo Fisichella, was deeply affected by the tragedy and wrote a letter to the Italian newspaper Gazetta dello Sport, to prevent the youth from taking this kind of risks. "What happened Saturday night on a Roman road has affected everybody, " he wrote. "It is impossible to accept the idea that you can lose your life when you are sixteen because of a stupid and crazy game. And it has deeply impressed me too, even if for years I've been doing a risky job at the wheel of a race car." "This tragedy was painful but not surprising, unfortunately, because these things have been happening for years," he continued. "When I was an adolescent there were various places, in the periphery of my city, where illegal and very dangerous races were run. I knew it and, sometimes, I have seen them. It was difficult to resist, many of us met with our cars put together in some way. But there was an ugly atmosphere, no sport and even little fun. I could fall into that too. What saved me was the fact that my passion for racing soon left the road for the track. The kart is today perhaps more attractive and safe than before. They are ideal to express your need for speed and to prove your skills at the wheel.
