Messi's mesmeric performance against the Gunners adds another record to his burgeoning collection and puts him alongside the likes of Marco Van Basten, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Andriy Shevchenko as a member of the four goal club. Van Basten was first to achieve the feat, bagging all four for Milan in their 1992 victory over IFK Gothenburg. Eight years later Simone Inzaghi managed a quartet of goals for Lazio in their 5-1 win over Marseille. Croatian striker Dado Prso scored four times in Monaco's 8-3 win over Deportivo La Coruna in November 2003 and, almost a year to the day later, Van Nistelrooy matched that figure in Manchester United's 4-1 win over Sparta Prague at Old Trafford. In 2005, Ukrainian Shevchenko netted four times for Milan against Fenerbahce, becoming the fifth player to do so. November has proved the most popular month to achieve the four goal haul with all bar Inzaghi and Messi making their mark in the early stages of the competition. Messi's foursome brings his overall tally for the campaign to 39 goals, one ahead of last season's final figure and leaves him as the competition's leading marksman this season, two ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo, who was eliminated in the last round with Real Madrid, and three ahead of Manchester United's Wayne Rooney. --
