Mariano Rivera (RP,Yankees) I hate to say this but for the first time, I think we might be seeing some chinks in Mariano Rivera旧 armor. Thats like saying the Grand Canyon is losing its attraction or Fenway Park needs to be replaced by something more modern and contemporary. Is this really happening? Is Rivera starting to slow down? Say it aint so, Mo. On Saturday night against the Rays, Rivera took his 2nd loss of the season allowing 4 runs (3 ER), in 2/3 of an inning, allowing 3 hits and 1 BB. Rivera's旧 ERA stands at 3.47, jumping a full run in this outing. While that is not a bad ERA for a pitcher, it's shocking to see Rivera with an ERA over 3.00. His K/9 and BB/9 are still amazingly good at 11.1 and 0.4 respectively. But here's the part that concerns me: this season Rivera has his highest H/9 at 9.1 and even more worrisome is a HR/9 at 2.0. With the exception of his first year in the Majors, Rivera has never has a HR/9 over 0.6. If we look at his percentage of pitches that are swung on and missed, it's down 5% from his career average and his CT % is up 5% over his career mean as well. While Rivera is still an elite closer and remains a must start, there are some eyebrow raising indicators this season that Rivera might just be slowing down.
