Share a story happened to me few years ago.
I used to work for a Japanese restaurnt (I live in U.S) as a waitress.
People who work at Japanese restaurants here usually are not Japanese,
just like you would see Vietnamese or Latino work at Chinese restaurts.
Japanese animation are very popular in U.S, so there are many American
know how to speak a little Japanese. When they come to a Japanese
restaurant, they like to show off their little Japanese skill.
I encountered this kind of situation many times, I went to a table and
customers start speaking Japanese to me without even asking me if I'm
a Japanese. I usually replied them politely 'sorry, I'm not a Japanese',
then they would just smile away. One time, I said this to a customer,
he got a little upset, then he asked me
C: WHERE are you from?
Me: I'm from Taiwan, I speak mandarin Chinese.
C (upsetting) : mm... I DON'T KNOW how to speak YOUR Mandarin Chinese.
Me (smiling): It's okay, don't worry. I speak English.
C freinds: LOL
I was not being mean, right?
