Hi Jenny, I guess many would agree that the fear of speaking in public is common among many Taiwanese students. It is quite interesting to think about the possible reasons why we Taiwanese students tend to choose to be silent when offered a chance to talk in public. I don't know about others, so I can only speak for myself. There seems always an anxiety or fear present, the fear that maybe my idea would not be accepted by others, or the fear that a dreaded silence would soon follow (are they laughing at me?). Speaking out will give them a chance to finally put me on the stand; they can judge me, and they may realize how immature I am and see me less. Whenever I was corrected that I used a wrong pronoun or forget to make certain nouns plural, I would be so deeply embarrassed that I wished I had never spoken in the first place. But then I decided that was not the way to go. I realized that If I wanted to get a job, then I would have to go through tons of interviews. I would be interrogated in various different ways and I would have to defend my position as a potential candidate. Once I got a job, I may be required to talk to clients, to host a meeting, or to give a presentation. I figured that I would have little time to learn all of this after I graduated so I decided that I'd better change my attitude toward public speaking. So I did. I made initiatives to talk to my classmates, I stopped shunning away from presentation opportunities. Teachers started to notice me and I started to make a few friends. I couldn't tell how much conversation skills I was learning along the way, but afterwards I became a happier person and I was glad that I had made that difficult transition, and I hope you will too. ^^ Chen --
