: Anyhow, books are hardly a way to enlighten one about a culture. : If you read my favorite book, the Catcher in the Rye, I bet you'd : have a different feeling about the American culture and about American : individuality. I think the Brainiests think the same. I met a lot of caucasian who respect some values in Chinese and Taiwanese culture even more than ourselves. Indeed those who wrote the books and changed the world are the brainiest, and the romantic idealists. They are intellectually engaged in thinking about the depth and width of humanity, universally, instead of following the mainstream cultrue. They might not be rich, but a lot of intellectuals and professors in private schools are decent and non-racists. They consists of all races. The Catcher in the Rye is a portrait of humanity too, if you think about it deeply, and what the author tried to present. I believe some values are intrinsic and universal, and it is ok to judge culture sometimes. When something is morally wrong, there's no arguments. Deep down we have the conscious of what is right and wrong. We are just fearful to admit and accept it, because we are just used to survive this way in the realistic world. : Stereotyping is a form of racism, even if it were true that our culture : does not emphasize individuality. If a person does not want to see us as : having leadership quality, they'll never see it anyway, and they'll never : promote an Asian they have stereotyped to lack leadership qualities. : Anyhow, there isn't any major racism/discrimination problems against : middle-class foreigners but racism still exists in the States, mostly towards : races who aren't as well off (Blacks+Latinos)...though I do think that part : of the racism those groups experience is because of their victim-mentality : and the way they deal with their situation. --
