Commissioner Robert Haas of the Cambridge, Massachusetts, police department
said Thursday that he “deeply regrets” the arrest of prominent black
Harvard University professor Henry Louis Gates but he stood by the white
officer who made the arrest, saying Sgt. James Crowley’s actions were
in no way racially motivated.
