Central News Agency In a bid to help workers forced to take unpaid leave amid the current economic recession, those who take part in an on-the-job training program will be subsidized by the government, Council of Labor Affairs (CLA) Minister Jennifer Wang (王如玄) announced Thursday. The program is slated to kick off in February and will provide participating workers with extra monetary assistance and an opportunity to sharpen their professional skills while forced to take their unpaid leave, Wang said, adding that Premier Liu Chao-shiuan (刘兆玄) has promised to back up the plan. According to Wang, the CLA is deeply concerned that more workers will lose their jobs after the Lunar New Year, which falls on January 26 next year. "I believe that the program will help increase workers' competitive edges and help stabilize the employment market, “the CLA minister said. Private companies participating in the program are required to open courses for their workers on unpaid leave, while the CLA will offer a subsidy of NT$100 (about US$3) for every hour of training, she said. Eligible workers should take at least 24 hours of training per month and will receive subsidies up to NT$10,000 per month for a maximum period of six months, she went on. Companies are not allowed to dismiss their workers who take part in the program, Wang added. The CLA has estimated that the program will subsidize about 5,600 companies, 600 of which are large enterprises employing over 200 people. It has predicted that some 168,000 workers will benefit from the measure.
