I suppose if we were to discuss this movie in any kind of detail, from any point of view, our minds will never rest in peace :p There are already so many posts on the "Movie" board that may do justice to satisfy one's curiosity and hopefully... the compulsion of simulating the uncoutable strings of discussion posts about Cape No.7 over there, here. (which is what I am doing right now...I suppose...@@) Well, I'd like to share two things that I learnt from a friend of mine when we were chatting about this "Cape Fever" phenomenon. She told me that she watched the movie with the elders in her family, and they told her how they appreciated the presentation of historical fact, and that they could see how the director did his research, about which I am going to list below. 1. At the beginning of the movie, there was a scene when the Japanese girl Tomoko and her bus-full of models could not pass the stone arched gate of the town because it was too low for the bus to go through. There is actually a background story for this... When the Japanese found Taiwan and wished to make it their colony, that town was where they first landed (Forever-Spring, if I may call it so). The local inhabitants, unsurprisingly, did put up a fight and there was blood-shed. They did not welcome the Japanese. And the hidden meaning behind that scene was that Tomoko could not go through the gate into the town because she was Japanese. 2. There were scenes in between the modern-time stream of the movie where we saw what happened 60 years ago: that the ship sailed away from Taiwan, and that the young girl in love with the Japanese teacher went to the harbour, hoping for one last glance of her lover and to wave him goodbye. The meaning behind this is: Back then, Japan had many other colonies in Southern Asia besides Taiwan. But Taiwan was the only colony that wished the japanese 'bon-voyage' when they left, and in fact is the only colony whose inhabitants reminisced the days of Japanese rule. I have watched this movie myself, and have also read through many of the post on "Movie" board regarding it (some are hilariously funny and others serious, but they were all quite interesting). When I heard this from my friend, it presented me with a new perspetive of the above-mentioned scenes which I did not recognize as being important or meaningful, especially when I did not have the opprotunity to learn Taiwanese history during school-age. I do not intend to raise argument by sharing this... I am no good as a debater.
