I already searched some old articles but haven't search any one with this topic so I want to say and share something about it, even it is not on the right time... (LOL) I tried to explain why chinese give red envelopes with money inside as a gift in this year's chinese new year. What I said is as followed. In common, when you are going to celebrate something like chinese new year, wedding... chinese are used to give the red envelope as gift, and why the red envelope is red not the other colors, is be cause in the chinese culture the color red means happiness, and why chinese give money instead buying any other kind of gift is be cause when you give money you don't need to worry about "what should I give to XXX as a gift?" or "what happens if someone gave the same gift as I will give?" giving money as a gift you don't need worry about and the people who recieved the envelope could buy whatever he/she wants. ===============================End of the story================================ After the long story, the foriegner (Brazil) said to me that giving money is too insipid, be caused the people who received the gift would not remember that what you gave to him/her. All I can say is in different country we will have different culture and different way to think and life. Only one thing that still bothering me is, since I said the history of the red envelope to them, I don't know that if is correct what I said to them, could any one complement what I said so that the next time I won't be wrong?
