I ran, endlessly. My lungs burned, muscles tearing back and forth, until between the swallowed gulps of air I suddenly realised that I was finished - that I couldn't go on, not one more breath or stride. My eyes, tearing with exhaustion and dust and failure, remained focused on the dirty path ahead as I crouched and forced new breath into my chest. I'd never felt such overwhelming fear and desperation together. But what could I do now? I was certainly finished, for the exam had already started and I was still half an hour away, not even at the station, and certainly farther than hope from where I ought to be. Naturally, it was at this moment that heaven opened up, a torrent of laughter from whichever god or ancestor had seen fit to curse me today. So this - standing in the rain, covered in dirt, half an hour too far from success - this is how it ends? My legs finally gave way, and I collapsed forward against the ground in complete and final despair. My 5th year at university, and thus my career, and thus my girlfriend, and thus my life, and thus everything, as surely extinguished as the batteries in my alarm clock had proven to be. My imagination flitted for a moment past an image of my parent's faces, recoiling in horror at what it had seen. No, I can't even think that yet. Even now, there must be some way out of this. As the rain began to soak through my hair, warm against my scalp, I felt something electricifying and unknowable pass through me; as though the world itself was gasping with laughter at my fate. In the same instant, I could only think: had I been hit by lightning, the punchline to this cruel joke? I grimaced; would it even be so bad if it was? Moments passed. It seemed not. Yet suddenly, the rain softened and fell back, and was replaced by an unnatural stillness. A voice - could it be called a voice? - spoke unannounced from behind me. It said, "I AM ORZ. WHY HAVE YOU SUMMONED ME?"
