I just finished the movie (agian) on TV. It's one of those movies that I am reluctant to watch a second time, but am automatically drawn after just the first few minutes. I promised no spoilers so I won't elaborate on the details or tell you anything that you haven't already seen on trailers. Anyway, the main idea of the story is that: diamonds, despite their exquisite beauty, has brought war rather than fortune to its origin-- Africa. Watching the movie, one would think that it is in a different world, a third world; and that it has nothing to do with us. Quite the contrary, these are real-life storys taking place just on the other side of the world. Distance does not make up for time, and silence definitely does not make everthing alright. Most of us take our lives for granted. We complain about the chaotic politics in Taiwan, but we can still afford a decent life style. And when we shop (or rather "window shop") in our fabulous malls and see a shimmering diamond in the window, it is so much more convenient to just admire its beauty and neglect the truth. Neglect the number of lives taken for this carat of shine. Neglect the fact that decent people who just happen to be born in Africa are inevitably sucked into this jeweled frenzy. The movie brought me to reflect on my life, to confirm my core values. At the end, they showed a beautiful diamond necklace in the window of a store. Is beauty truely worth the life of another human being? How about two? How about hundreds; or thousands for that matter? I stongly recomend this movie to those whom haven't seen it already! After the movie, my mom said, "When you're rich, remember to buy me a diamond." I love my mom, but I was truely disgusted by that remark. I answered: "We'll see." cuz the premise was nearly impossible! I realized that to some, a movie will be a movie. Can we really make a difference? I don't know... --
