Nice saying! Also, there are a few tips which might be helpful. 1. Re-organize, or restate, or numerate those topics or main ideas. This will help you clarify the author's logic and have a better picture. Some authors are so thoughtful that they arranged topics in numbers or alphabets; so might prefer "transition words" such as: first, secondly, moreover, etc. Also, some other words like "because, hence, on the other hand" are used to state cause-effect relationship or comparison. 2. Use the 80/20 rule to arrange your attention on those paragraphs. More than 80% of your attention should be on those main ideas and the logic among them, which should be less then 20% of the paragragh. Which also means, 80% of the pages should be "skimmed", unless you find something important during your skimming. 3. Words underlined, numerated, or typed in Bold or Italic should be treated with extra efforts. Make sure you understand their definitions or the reasoning. So as figuares, charts, tables, and formulas. 4. Always get a whole picture of all the chapters you are supposed to study before you read them thoroughly. It's fine to resort to Chinese edition or notes when later you find out you can't finish the whole English copy. Also, don't forget to self-check your understanding when you finish one chapter. It's very simple: just restate the topics on your own, either in English or Chinese. 5. Some introductory textbooks might be easy to comprehend. Some books might be written in sophisticated language. Just don't get frustrated when you come into the latter. You might well cross-reference with other easier books or a Chinese copy. Don't need to stock there. Have fun! --
