I thought about this issues as well. Using English name may cause some trouble indeed because the name on my official documents are my Chinese name, but still I go by Ashley among my non-Chinese friends. I got the same question (what's wrong with your Chinese name?) once in a while when I was in grad school. I always wanted to tell them, "There's nothing wrong with my Chinese name. I'll tell you my Chinese name if you're able to pronounce it correctly." Well, I've never really said that. I just told them that it's easier for them to remember my English name. But really, I dont see the point for them to address me with my Chinese name. They can probably imitate the pronouncation pretty well, but still they don't understand the meaning of our names. Chinese words are not just sounds, but with figures and meanings, too. I adore my Chinese name, but I can identify with my English name as well.
