I don't think it's so much the pace that they speak or anything, although they (British) do tend to speak slower than Americans (I think) I think it's more WHAT they say that makes it supposedly 'elegant'. Try and read the English version of any of Jane Austen's novels and you will see what I mean. I think the British tend to use more difficult words in general to describe the same thing, whereas Americans especially use a lot of slang. I'm not saying either is a good thing or a bad thing. Too much slang can be annoying, however, so can excessive 'elegant' language, especially if it means that something simple is explained in very difficult terms! --
