Yes, you need to download a program, for example PuTTY. And you need to
set up the IP of the workstation you want to login. Of course, you need
to make sure you have an account in that workstation. After you login,
you can use all the resource on that machine.

The data, of course, is stored remotely on that workstation (or its NIS
server).
