Could it be Novak Djokovic’s summer at Wimbledon? I wouldn’t rule it out. Even
if he has lost half a step since his peak years as an athlete, this tournament
is all about the mind.
Grass-court tennis tests your mental strength and your temperament like no other
surface. On clay, if you miss a break point, you don’t need to worry too much:
there will be another one along in a minute. But on grass, you might only get o
ne chance per set.
This sorts the men from the boys. And Novak isn’t just a grown up; he is the el
der statesman of the game.
At 39, he will not be the fastest or the strongest player in the draw anymore. B
ut Wimbledon favours the smartest players ahead of the finest physical specimens
. I’m talking about people who can read the game, and who can understand their
opponent’s strengths. Every server has a favourite corner to hit on break-point
down, so you must study that information in advance, and then apply it when the
time comes.
Djokovic’s tennis intelligence has helped win seven Wimbledon titles.
Djokovic
During the three years that I spent coaching Novak, I learned a few Serbian swea
rwords. If you get the game plan wrong, he will be p––d off, because the man i
s the ultimate perfectionist.
But he won two Wimbledon titles in that time because he understood the need to b
e unpredictable, and to launch attacks when the other guy wasn’t expecting it.
The element of surprise is so much more important on grass. You must keep your p
oker face on at all times, and then only show your true cards when it matters mo
st.
Novak would be braver, and more “clutch” – as the Americans say – than his r
ivals. When the decisive moment came, Novak might seize the initiative with a da
ring dash to the net behind hi second serve.
It all came together when we went to Wimbledon for the first time together, in t
he summer of 2014. At that time Novak was on a sequence of runner-up finishes at
the slams: he had lost five of his previous six major finals. But that was a hu
ge event for him because he defeated Roger Federer over five sets in the Wimbled
on final, and then nibbled a piece of the Centre Court grass in celebration.

From there, he reversed his recent trend by winning six of his next seven finals
. And the biggest change that we made, to make that happen, was in his court pos
ition.
When I first got to him, Novak was standing three or four metres behind the base
line. It was taking him four hours to win matches. Even though he was younger an
d fitter in those days, his tank was empty by the semi-finals.
Because of his talent, I advised him to stay much closer to the baseline. I beli
eved it would help him to win points, sets and matches faster, by applying more
pressure to his opponent. Then, if you get the job done quickly and you still wa
nt to work on your forehand up the line, we can go and book a practice court for
afters.
We also worked on structuring each point more aggressively. I didn’t want him t
rading backhands across court 15 times. I said: “Do it three times, and then go
for the winner.” Train the brain, so that you can speed everything up.
The other key point about playing on grass was that he needed to serve better, b
ecause that saves you a lot of heartache. He simplified his serve at that stage.
It had been a bit of a messy action when he was younger, but now it is so relia
ble that he can bank on it whenever he comes under pressure.
If anything, there were moments during our time together when Novak was too tech
nical. As a coach, I had to remind him not to overthink his shots, because tenni
s requires quick movements and almost instantaneous reactions to the ball. If yo
u’re thinking too much about your technique, you’ll be late with your shot.
He soon understood everything we worked on and took it into his game. This is wh
at the great players do: they evolve. And Novak, as his record proves, is the gr
eatest of all time. He has incredible IQ, both in his tennis and across his life
in general. Here is a man who can talk in six or seven languages about business
, about politics, about science. His personal icon is Nikola Tesla. Which other
sportsman or woman has such a hero?
The way Novak improved his serve is similar to what Jannik Sinner has done in th
e last year or so. Again, Sinner is a very intelligent player, and with a smart
coach in Darren Cahill, he understands the value of a serve that earns a lot of
free points.
I see a lot of comparisons between Sinner and Novak. They are both very calculat
ing players, whereas Carlos Alcaraz has the soul of an artist. Like Roger Federe
r, Alcaraz wants to create a painting on the court. I’ve spoken about the impor
tance of the game plan for Novak, but the worst thing you could do with either F
ederer or Alcaraz is to give them any kind of game plan. They want to go out the
re and improvise, to play creative and free.
It’s a great thing for tennis that Novak is still here and still giving us the
benefit of his insight. On Wednesday night, his comments on Serena Williams, who
m he described as “an incredible gift for our sport”, were absolutely spot on
even though they could also apply to Novak himself.
As for how long he will carry on, my money is on the 2028 Olympics in LA. The on
ly problem is that the regular tour has come to bore him. If you’ve won 24 majo
rs, what’s your motivation for fitting in another Miami Open? As a result, he i
s sometimes in danger of not playing enough. Four matches between Melbourne and
Paris this year was on the light side, even for such a great champion.
The danger is that, because Novak has so many other interests, sometimes they ta
ke him away a little bit from tennis. He will really need to discipline himself
to make it to LA ’28. But I’m hoping for the sport’s sake that he gets there.
