You know what kind of was, though? Hiring Chip Hale as the manager. There wasn't much made of the hiring at the time because he's not a big name nor does he have any MLB managerial experience.I love the fit, though. Hale was the A's bench coach for the past three seasons -- all playoff seasons with a low-payroll ballclub. He does have plenty of minor-league managerial experience, including three seasons with the Diamondbacks' Triple-A affiliate. He also was the bench coach during the D-Backs' 2007 playoff run. He also played college baseball for the University of Arizona. It's a great match. I believe Hale is going to prove a good big-league manager, which of course is most important. He's known as a big work ethic guy with strong leadership qualities and loads of energy. Control has never been Webster's strong suit and his relationship with the strike zone has been especially tenuous in his major league stints, but he's got the bat-missing thing down. In 89 1/3 innings, he has caused batters to whiff on more than 12 percent of his pitches and he has a long history of high swinging strike rates as a minor leaguer. Because of his lackluster big league resume, you won't need to target Webster outside of deep leagues on Draft Day, but if he shows even decent control in the early going, act quickly to snap him up. Newly signed Yasmany Tomas is said to have 30-homer potential himself, too. We're still shaking off the video-game numbers from the so-called Steroid Era, but let's keep in mind that 30-homer guys are relatively rare these days. There were only 11 last season and only the Blue Jays had more than one guy get there. Hellickson's fly ball tendencies are a bad fit for Chase Field, as I've noted before, and they'll need to see development from de la Rosa and Webster. It's absolutely possible that this problem goes away during the season, but a lot would have to happen. Corbin would need to come back at full strength, Hellickson would need to keep the ball in the park like he never has before, Webster and de la Rosa would need to grow into productive MLB starters and either Collmenter proves effective or Trevor Cahill returns to All-Star form after four years of not being there. Or Bradley gets close to his big upside nearly immediately upon promotion to the majors. Several projection systems have them as either the worst team in baseball or in the conversation. They've surprised before -- their last two playoff appearances were both from seemingly "out of nowhere" -- and anything is possible, but this team doesn't yet look ready to compete. They are especially outmanned by the Giants, Dodgers and the upcoming Padres in the NL West. Instead, a successful season will be seeing what youngsters are part of the solution -- especially in the rotation -- and how the team grows under promising new skipper Hale.
