Petit was claimed by the Seattle Mariners, Slaten by the Washington Nationals. It became obvious this season that Petit, a fly-ball pitcher, was an awful fit for Chase Field, a hitter-friendly ballpark. In 229 1/3 innings in his career, he has allowed 1.96 home runs per nine innings, tied for the worst rate in major league history. Slaten pitched well as a rookie in 2007, posting a 2.72 ERA, but had knee surgery after that season and was never quite the same. Neither pitcher was expected to figure much into the 2010 plans.
