The Diamondbacks are believed to have offered Johnson a one-year deal worth between $2.5 million and $3 million in November; he signed a one-year, $8 million deal, which includes another $5 million in bonuses, with the Giants in December. Byrnes said the club's finances have changed since November. Essentially, Byrnes said less money is being budgeted for the upcoming draft, partially because free agent Adam Dunn wasn't offered arbitration, making more money available for the major-league payroll. "We've had a number of conversations, and we're getting close," said Rick Thurman, Gordon's agent, without elaborating. Gordon, 41, was one of the better relievers in baseball before suffering shoulder and elbow injuries the past two seasons. From 1998 to 2006, he posted a cumulative 2.97 ERA in 488 2/3 innings.
