But Greene was the Warriors leader by a substantial margin in every significant offensive category as Lewis-Clark tried to nail down yet another NAIA World Series crown. He was hitting .442 with 30 doubles, 18 homers and 89 RBIs. A year ago, he hit just .324-7-51. Greene became a stronger, more physical presence this season and he showed significantly more pop in his lefthanded bat. He also made the transition at mid-season from first base to third, further enhancing his value for this year’s draft as he handled the position at least as well as Mills did. —ALLAN SIMPSON Player Pos. B-T HT WT Hometown B’date Daniel Webb RHP R-R 3-Jun 205 Kentucky 8/18/1989 SCOUTING REPORT (3/1): Webb was held out most of last summer with a broken ankle sustained in the Kentucky state high school playoffs. He still pitched five innings after being injured to finish the year with an 8-2, 2.00 record with 116 strikeouts in 73 innings. He came back strong with four-plus innings at the 2007 World Wood Bat Association fall championship in Jupiter, Fla., in October, throwing 94-96 mph. Only Gerrit Cole, the top-ranked prep righthander in the 2008 class, threw harder. Webb is strong and mature at 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, and depends on strength rather than finesse in his pitching. His command and delivery are still rough but there is no mistaking the velocity. Webb is also a good enough hitter to have hit a home run as a sophomore at the 2006 East Coast Pro Showcase while playing first base. He hit a resounding .433-11-46 for his high school team as a junior.—DAVID RAWNSLEY UPDATE (5/15): Webb is not as refined a pitcher as Robbie Ross or Nick Maronde, two of his fellow Kentucky high school pitching phenoms, but he throws harder, up to 96 mph, and may be the most signable of the trio—two factors that elevate him to the No. 1 ranking among prep prospects. Webb is a power pitcher all the way, with a power fastball and power curve, but he may not throw any harder down the road as he is physically mature and tends to muscle his fastball up to the plate. His delivery is not as refined as the other elite pitchers in the class, and it may lead to control issues down the road. In 35 innings this spring, he walked 18 while striking out 49. His inability to throw consistent strikes was a contributing factor in his being just a .500 pitcher this spring.—ALLAN SIMPSON Player Pos. B-T HT WT Hometown B’date Ollie Linton OF L-L 9-May 165 Winnetka, Calif. 4/7/1986 SCOUTING REPORT: Pound for pound, Linton is one of the best players in the country. He may have no equal as a defensive center fielder and it’s possible that no one runs the bases any better. He’s undersized, raising questions about strength and durability, but he excels at the short game and understands what his limitations are. A clone of the Dodgers’ Juan Pierre, he has legit speed, uses the whole field and is a true leadoff hitter. He was a catalyst atop the UCI batting order this spring, hitting .330-3-33 with 35 stolen bases in 42 attempts with a week remaining in the regular season. On the flip side, Linton has little power and a below-average arm may relegate him to left field. —ALLAN SIMPSON Player Pos. B-T HT WT Junior College B’date Trevor Harden RHP R-R 6-1 215 New Mexico 9/1/1987 SCOUTING REPORT (3/1): Harden led New Mexico JC to within a game of its second Junior College World Series title in three years IN 2007, topping the 55-8 Thunderbirds in wins and strikeouts while going 13-1, 3.28 and fanning 102 in 104 innings. One of three starters with at least a dozen wins last season, Harden assumed the role of unquestioned staff ace this season. Through his first six starts, he had already lost more games than he had all last year. Harden has been challenged to show more consistent command of a fastball that has routinely reached 94-96 mph but was prone to dipping into the high 80s as a freshman. He typically gets plenty of movement on the pitch as he throws it from a low, three-quarters angle. His occasional loss of velocity often causes him to resort to a 74-77 mph slider that lacks velocity and tilt and a solid changeup with good sinking action as his primary pitches on occasion. His stuff is probably better suited for a relief role at the pro level. Though he wasn’t drafted in June, Harden should be a prime draft target in 2008 and will have a scholarship offer from Miami to use as leverage.—ALLAN SIMPSON UPDATE (5/15): Harden didn’t build on his freshman success, posting just a 5-2 , 5.47 record with 58 strikeouts in 51 innings. He also gave up 60 hits. Harden missed six weeks of the 2008 season with a pulled hamstring, injuring it in Arizona on March 15 with a large delegation of scouts on hand to see him pitch. Though his record didn’t indicate it, Harden continued to impress scouts with a solid three-pitch mix that included a fastball in the 90-93 mph range and climbed to 95 on occasion. He showed a feel for a true slider with hard, late tilt, but his best pitch was his 77-78 mph sinking changeup. Had Harden been healthy all season and pitched closer to his 2007 form, he might have inched close to the second or third round, but he should still be the top draft in the state.—AS --
