"I look forward to being a Diamondback again," he said. "Hopefully, that's the case. Unfortunately for me, it's not 100 percent in my control." After spending time with the A's, Rockies and Orioles in 2005, Byrnes was non-tendered by Baltimore making him a free agent. He signed a one-year deal with the D-Backs for $2.25 million and has been the club's best hitter. The 30-year-old has played mostly center field, but has hit up and down in the batting order, leading the team in both homers (20) and stolen bases (18). The D-Backs hold Byrnes' rights for next year, but if they choose not to offer him salary arbitration, he would become a free agent. When asked if the D-Backs are interested in bringing him back, Arizona GM Josh Byrnes (no relation) didn't hesitate before saying yes. "He's been tremendous," Josh Byrnes said. "Obviously, he's had a very good year offensively. His basestealing has been timely and he impacts the game just through his effort and defense. He's certainly been one of our most important players this year." Josh Byrnes declined to get into whether the team would offer Eric Byrnes a multi-year contract, or what his role might be, saying that they were decisions for the offseason. With top prospect Chris Young likely to take over in center next year and Carlos Quentin the odds-on favorite for right field, the D-Backs may want to have Byrnes play left if Luis Gonzalez is not brought back. So would Byrnes be amenable to playing a position other than center? "Wherever they want me," Byrnes said. "If our best team is with me playing on one of the corners rather than in center -- then great. I'd be more than willing to make whatever position adjustments they want me to." And Byrnes is certainly open to signing a multi-year deal to stay in Arizona. "For me bouncing around so frequently over the past couple of years, I can't think of something that would be more attractive than stability," he said. "It's a lot easier to play knowing that you've got a little security and know you're going to be with the same team. That's really important to me. Switching teams in such a short period of time, I'd like to make this my home for a while. I'd love to be here for a few years." Leading off: Young was in the leadoff spot for the first time on Wednesday, a spot he could find himself in more often in future years. "Why not?" D-Backs manager Bob Melvin said. "He had a .360-plus on-base percentage [with Triple-A Tucson]. [He] steals bases. With Craig Counsell not in there today and Byrnes hitting in the middle of the order right now, I think it's a good option." Help on the way: Pitcher Greg Aquino and infielder Andy Green will likely be activated from the disabled list on Friday when the Major League rosters expand. In addition, the D-Backs could call up a reliever or two, along with another catcher. That will be it until Tucson is eliminated from the playoffs. After that, there will be more promotions. Scratched: Catcher Chris Snyder is still suffering the effects of a foul tip he took off his right hand recently and was scratched from the starting lineup on Wednesday. Johnny Estrada took his place in the lineup. Back: Shortstop Stephen Drew was back in the starting lineup after missing a pair of games due to soreness in his right hand. "Once again, into today and after a couple days of treatment, we feel like it's that much better," Melvin said. "So, hopefully we're on the right track as far as alleviating his problem." Another catcher: Ideally, Melvin would like to have a third catcher on his roster, a guy that can also play other positions. "In the National League, to have a guy like that, who can be a third guy and play other infield positions, is certainly a luxury," Melvin said. Coming up: The Diamondbacks head to D.C. to take on the Nationals for a three-game series starting at 4:05 p.m. MST on Friday. Miguel Batista (10-8, 4.46 ERA) will face Billy Traber (3-3, 7.14 ERA). --
