The club called up reliever Jeff Bajenaru and utility infielder Alberto Callaspo from Triple-A Tucson prior to Sunday's series finale against the Astros. In corresponding moves, the D-Backs designated left-handed specialist Randy Choate for assignment and sent Dustin Nippert, who made a spot start on Saturday night in place of Brandon Webb, back to Tucson. Both Bajenaru and Callaspo were acquired in the offseason. Bajenaru came over form the White Sox in exchange for Alex Cintron, and Callaspo was acquired from the Angels for right-hander Jason Bulger. D-Backs manager Bob Melvin said that Bajenaru was brought up to fill a long-relief role, which was needed because D-Backs starters have not lasted more than five innings in the last four games. Callaspo gives Melvin a switch-hitter off the bench. After Jeff DaVanon sprained his left ankle in Saturday's game, the club was looking to add another bat to what was a three-man bench. DaVanon is expected to miss only two or three games, so Melvin said it wasn't necessary to place him on the disabled list. Melvin added that he would like to give the versatile infielder a start at some point. Callaspo has experience playing third, shortstop and second base, his natural position. "[Callaspo's] walks to strikeouts are staggering," Melvin said. "He's got, I think, 15 more extra-base hits than he has strikeouts. There's not too many guys, if any, that have numbers like that. He's really impressed us down there." Callaspo boasted a .336 average for the Sidewinders with five home runs, 61 RBIs and a team-high 12 triples. In addition, he collected 51 walks while only striking out 23 times. Bajenaru compiled a 4-2 record with a 4.48 ERA in 46 appearances out of the Tucson bullpen. Even before the game started, it was a long day for the two callups, as they flew to Phoenix from New Orleans at 7 a.m. MST. "I didn't get any sleep," said Callaspo. On the move: Melvin said that DaVanon's injury forced the club to designate Choate, although his numbers proved he belonged at the big-league level. "The DaVanon situation really affected Choate, and Randy's pitched well enough to stay here," Melvin said. "But we just needed a position player." Choate was called up from Tucson on June 13 and compiled a 4.66 ERA in 21 relief appearances. He threw a scoreless inning in Saturday's loss. "It was difficult," Melvin added. "It wasn't easy. We were here a long time [on Saturday] night trying to figure out where all this was going." "I'm a little surprised, but it's just the way it goes," Choate said. "He told me it wasn't because of how I pitched, but because he needed some guys that could go multiple innings, and this was the decision they had to make. They didn't have a choice." Melvin said that Nippert was not called up to pitch for any extended period of time and the pitcher was aware that he was most likely only up for a day. Short rest: Rookie right-hander Enrique Gonzalez will pitch on Monday on three days' rest. The D-Backs had to decide between starting Gonzalez on short rest and calling up another pitcher from Tucson due to a double-header in Chicago on Thursday coupled with the fact that Webb missed his spot in the rotation due to inflammation in his right elbow. "We monitored [Gonzalez's] bullpen, and he said his arm felt great [on Saturday]," Melvin said. "He's a guy that does have a resilient arm, and we wouldn't have asked him to do this if we didn't think he could do it. "We could have [called up another starter for Monday], but we dug down there for Nip. He didn't have a great game [on Saturday], and we just felt like considering all the different variables because Enrique only pitched five innings, we though it was best suited to just bring him back on [three days' rest]." Gonzalez last pitched on Thursday and gave up six earned runs in five innings for his third loss of the season. Melvin said that Webb will play catch on Monday and if all goes according to plan, he will throw a bullpen session on Tuesday. Melvin said he is hopeful that Webb may be able to start on either Friday or Saturday when the D-Backs host the Marlins. Easley in there: Utility infielder Damion Easley got the start at second base on Sunday in place of everyday second baseman Orlando Hudson, who has been bothered recently by a sore left ankle. "He's banged it up a couple times," Melvin said. "It's something that's been lingering for a while and hasn't gotten any better. [It's tough] to give him a day off, because he's swung the bat so well." After a pair of doubles on Saturday, Hudson has lifted his average to .281. The addition of Callaspo also gives Melvin the opportunity to rest some of his other infielders. Up next: The D-Backs return to National League West play on Monday when they welcome the Giants for a three-game set at Chase Field. Gonzalez (3-3, 5.40 ERA) will take on Jason Schmidt (8-7, 3.11).
