First, Hairston had better numbers than Quentin. Second, Hairston is on the 40-man roster, whereas Quentin isn't. He struggled last year and after being demoted in the second half, he was placed on waivers and taken off the 40-man roster. No team claimed him because he was owed $1.2 million for 2006 based on the two-year contract he signed before the 2005 season. That contract has turned out to be both a blessing and a curse for Koplove.
