DEPORTIVO BACK IN TITLE HUNT http://www.deportivo-la-coruna.com/ 17th February 2003 -- After the defeats of Real Madrid (1-0 at Osasuna) and Real Sociedad (3-2 at Betis) the title race seems to be wide open again for Deportivo. Some weeks ago supporters and players all agreed that because of losing matches at Atletico and Espanyol the chances in the Liga were virtually over. But now, with the first position only five points away, the team has much illusion again to become champions this season. Wins like the one on Saturday, with a disciplined defence and a lethal attack, should be the way to follow for Deportivo. The same way of playing brought a 0-2 victory at Betis Sevilla although at home the team keeps having problems. Next Saturday Alaves will visit Riazor, an irregular team against which Depor should be able to get three points to stay in the Liga hunt. But which teams are the main rivals now for Deportivo? Real Sociedad have lost their unbeatable status after losing at Bilbao (3-0) and Betis (3-2) while drawing at home to Espanyol (0-0). The team is having injury and suspension problems now and will have to react very strongly if it wants to keep it’s Liga chances intact. Only time will tell whether they can handle the pressure, although they don’t have any Copa or Champions League worries. Also Real Madrid and Valencia are rivals for the title. Real Madrid already have lost their Copa participation and have an important clash with Borussia Dortmund this week in the Champions League. Nevertheless, the team is very irregular and doesn’t function at all as their management would have wished when signing all those stars. There’s no balance in the team, having the best players of the world upfront with only two central defenders available. Valencia are the same as they have been the last years: very regular, with the best defence of the world. They also are still alive in the Champions League, so this could be an important factor for all these three clubs. All Deportivo, Real Madrid and Valencia are in a difficult position in their groups so chances of elimination are there. But if so, probably the chances of winning the Liga title will increase.
