Yu Darvish's jokes aside, the New York Yankees overpaid for Masahiro Tanaka
If you thought that the $175 million that the New York Yankees spent on signing
Masahiro Tanaka and paying off his former Japanese Pro Baseball team was too
much money, you're not alone.
Not only are you not alone, but you just might have something in common with
the No.1 starter on the Texas Rangers.
That No.1 starter is Yu Darvish, and he knows a thing or two about pitching in
Japan, transitioning to the majors and signing big contracts along the way.
Two years ago, Darvish was a free agent coming over to the majors, very much
like Tanaka. Tuesday afternoon, when Darvish addressed the media, he was asked
about the deal Tanaka signed with the Yankees.
"I don’t know the details of the posting system but I think the Yankees gave
him a little bit too much," Darvish said.
Just over two years ago, Darvish signed a six-year, $56 million deal with the
Texas Rangers. The Rangers also had to fork over $51.7 million to his Japanese
Pro Team, the Nippon-Ham Fighters. The Yankees spent much less on Tanaka's
posting fee ($20 million) but a put a great deal more money towards his final
contract ($155 million)
Considering that Darvish was basically the same age as Tanaka when he signed
with a major league team, and that Darvish had as good, if not a more
impressive Japanese Pro resume, Darvish's comments were newsworthy.
Was this sour grapes? It is tough to tell. For his part, Darvish must have
immediately sensed the uproar his comments could cause because less than an
hour after those comments, Darvish backtracked and claimed he was joking.
"I am sorry if anyone took my comment seriously about Masahiro Tanaka at the
press conference today," Darvish said in a statement. "I assumed by the
reaction in the room that everyone knew I was joking."
Whether Darvish was joking or not, he has a point: The money the Yankees spent
on the unproven Tanaka blows away a legit Cy Young candidate -- like Darvish.
Tanaka isn't the first the Japanese pitcher that every major league baseball
fan have buzzed about in recent years. Before him, fans were talking about
Darvish, and before that, they were talking about Daisuke Matsuzaka.
Matsuzaka's well documented struggles with the Boston Red Sox, combined with a
much less player-friendly posting system probably combined to deflate the
market for Darvish back in 2011.
Darvish's success since arriving in the majors, combined with a new, far more
player-friendly posting system combined to create the massively inflated market
for Tanaka.
It didn't hurt that the New York Yankees weren't all that serious about signing
Darvish back in 2011. That's a dramatic departure from the laser-like focus
that Brian Cashman put into signing Tanaka this past offseason.
It can't be a complete coincidence that the Yankees maximum offer to five-time
All-Star second baseman Robinson Cano, just happened to be for the identical
amount ($175 million) that the team spent on Tanaka.
However, was Darvish right in questioning the Tanaka contract, even if it was a
joke? It will be difficult for the 2013 crossover to live up to the standard
set by Darvish. Is Tanaka going to lead the AL in strikeouts, finish second in
the AL Cy Young balloting, and have an ERA under 3.00, all within his first two
years of pitching in the majors?
Forget any excuses about pitching in Yankee Stadium, the ballpark the Rangers
play in is every bit the launching pad the new stadium in New York City is.
Darvish also has to pitch through the unbearably hot summers in Arlington,
Texas.
In 2013, no pitcher in the American League gave up fewer hits per nine innings
pitched than the 6.2 that Darvish allowed. He only won 13 games, but he was
playing for a Rangers team that struggled to consistently score runs.
Darvish's rookie season wasn't nearly as good as his follow-up, but he won 16
games pitching for a Rangers team with a more potent offense.
The Rangers are scheduled to spend $10 million a year, for the next three
seasons of Darvish's Cy Young-caliber production.
The Yankees will spend $22 million on Tanaka this coming season. It would be
foolish to expect Tanaka's 2014 to be all that much better than Darvish's
rookie season in Texas was, and he will earn more than twice as much.
It doesn't add-up.
Back in January of 2012, then-Rangers CEO -- and Hall of Fame starting pitcher
-- Nolan Ryan has high praise for Darvish immediately after he was signed.
"I think he certainly has the potential to be (an ace)," Ryan said. "It's not
fair of me to say that I see him as our No. 1, but I certainly think he has the
potential," Ryan said. "He's very unique."
Fast forward to present day New York City. Less than two weeks ago, Cashman
told ESPN Radio's Colin Cowherd what he expects from his $175 million
investment.
"We view him to be a really solid, consistent No. 3 starter," Cashman said on
"The Herd with Colin Cowherd" on ESPN Radio. "If we get more than that, all the
better. He's got a great deal of ability."
Darvish is pitching like a No. 1 and getting paid like a No. 3.
Tanaka may or may not pitch like a No. 1, but he sure is getting paid like one.
This in spite of the fact that even his own team isn't expecting him to be all
that much more than a No. 3.
The comments made by Darvish sparked a bit of an uproar, but they really
shouldn't have.
Even if Darvish wasn't joking, he's got good reasons to feel underpaid, and
good reasons to speculate that Tanaka is overpaid.
